Frequently Asked Questions

Is hemorrhoidectomy a major surgery?

Hemorrhoidectomy is an invasive and sometimes painful treatment option, but it can be an effective, even permanent fix. Complications are rare and not usually serious.

How long does it take to recover from hemorrhoidectomy?

Most people are able to return to work and other activities around 7 to 10 days after hemorrhoid removal surgery. Full recovery may take 2 to 4 weeks.

How painful is a hemorrhoidectomy?

Hemorrhoidectomy surgery may be painful, but different procedures to remove less serious hemorrhoids may be painless. Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are engorged veins located around the anus or in the lower rectum. Hemorrhoids occur as a result of excessive straining, usually during defecation.

What is the best procedure to remove hemorrhoids?

Surgical hemorrhoidectomy is the most effective treatment for hemorrhoids, though it is associated with the greatest rate of complications. Illustration reprinted with permission from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

*During the first 24 hours after your surgery you can place an icepack over the surgical site. This can help reduce swelling and pain. A warm pack can also be helpful during the recovery period. *You should take sitz baths for the first few days following your surgery. Plain, warm water (no soaps or salts) is recommended. 10 to 15 minutes 2-3 times a day is
minimum. *To have regular bowel function, you must eat regularly. This is best accomplished with fiber. You should also drink plenty of fluid.
